Real-world exercise (& movement)

My granddaughter turned 7 on Friday – my partner and I had decided to take a short trip to be there, also for the kids’ party on Saturday. Her parents had bought her a large trampoline as a birthday present – can’t beat a trampoline for kids, if you ask me; the parents usually have as much fun with it too!

My main job was therefore to assemble it: the trampoline itself was not so bad, although I didn’t initially notice that the ‘straight’ sides weren’t actually quite straight ๐Ÿ˜…; the safety net, however … with the shitty cheap sheet metal spanner, 32 polystop nuts that had to go on so far that it took aaages to get it done. Buuuut got it done the day before her birthday … and then I had to test it, of course ๐Ÿ˜. THAT was nice ๐Ÿ‘!!

Walking / Hiking (empty)

Away from home this weekend … decided to make this the ‘week off’ so skipped a hike and shifted the long run to Friday.

Running

Am getting a bit better at pacing my ‘speedy strides’ runs – trying to get to the point where I can just hold an accelerated pace for 50-60 paces whilst keeping a reasonably fast pace constant throughout; I guess I’m looking to get the time under 25mins, if I’m honest, even if it’s not super important … but in general, it’s about seeing a reduction in time as my weight goes down and my fitness goes up.

Couldn’t do my ‘usual’ 10k volume run route this week as I was visiting my step-daughter / step-granddaughter. Nevertheless, I’ve done some 10k routes here some years ago, so I still have some kind of a basis to compare to. Actually, a portion of it was trail-running, or more like jungle trail that I had to fight through undergrowth to get from A to B ๐Ÿ˜… (and I stopped to take pics here or there):

Climbing

Tuesday’s bouldering session was a break from the norm: J couldn’t make it due to a (hopefully) minor shoulder injury, so S and I were on our own … and it turns out she was serious about getting some advice on her footwork (which she knows is lacking precision). So, I gave her an impromptu ‘trainer session’ on the Grasshopper board in the hall, which she appreciated; I figured this might hopefully also have a double-positive side in as much as giving her the opportunity to find projects which are available ‘forever’, mirroring the ones she likes to ensure symmetrical training … and, if we’re lucky, perhaps it might even offer S & J the chance to boulder together on different routes with different priorities ๐Ÿคž ๐Ÿ™.

After that, there were a few other familiar faces, including trainer R, so a group of us tackled some of the trickier routes, trying to crack some cruxes. Indeed, on a 7er route where I have two cruxes, including a ‘stand-up’ move that I just couldn’t crack, I finally managed to stand up 3 times in a row … so maybe another potential ‘first 7er’.

Away from home on Wednesday I completely overlooked that I was going for a second bouldering session in 2 days … literally only occurred to me on the way home ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Still, no negative effects … was really nice to hit a ‘new’ hall with everything being fresh (think it’d been a year or so since I’d been to this converted tennis court of a boulder hall. They did a great job of the conversion, with a really nice overhang island in the centre of the court and one long and one short side kitted out with more-or-less vertical walls.

Sunday was the day of the Kids Cup bouldering competition … I’d heard on Tuesday already that nearly 50 kids were registered to take part – add at least one parent plus potentially siblings -> I had expected the main hall to be packed with spillover activity. Wasn’t however – I bouldered with young, 21 year old A and that was it. Was good though, we each had some good tips for the other which always lends to having a positive session.
