I have two main motivations for journaling through this ‘event’ in my life:
- keeping track of the events, the thought processes, the progress I will hopefully make, and
- logging information, useful gear, white papers, links, basically anything that might be helpful to anyone going through this tough time in life (including future-me, if I happen to re-rupture during rehab or do the other tendon in 😬 !).
The fact that I enjoy writing, so that the journaling is actually pretty therapeutic, is more of a positive side-effect … but one that I am grateful for; perhaps I’ve even found the topic for my first ever book, but that’s something for another page …
At any rate, I found the first 24 hours after rupturing my Achilles tendon towards the end of October ’25 to be draining, a whirlwind, a “what the hell do I do now?!” period. I had at least recognised the rupture as such immediately due to research on tendon problems from earlier cases of golfer’s elbow (like tennis elbow, but on the inside of the elbow joint); from my deceased father-in-law, I also knew enough to know that time was of the essence if an operation was necessary, so going to the ER was not something to be considered, debated or even avoided. Not that I really could have done anything else other than be driven there, to be honest 😅 … walking, even driving – no way THAT was going to happen!
Following the initial shock of those first hours, until I’d gotten a decent diagnosis I could find peace with, I spent the days in pretty much a constant state of high alert. Part of this process was educating myself as best I could to try and have some kind of basis of information to make – for me, for my injury – a decision which was as informed and sensible as possible.
Now, I am NOT a doctor (if you’re wondering who I am, click here to find out); I am also not offering any kind of medical advice, rather I am documenting and collecting experiences and resources I discovered during my own Achilles tendon rehab journey. If this helps even one person just a bit, every second I’ve put into this journal and set of resources will have been worth it.
P.S. Anyone wanting to in any way add to / improve / correct anything in this journal / set of resources: please do go ahead and leave any infos you like in the comment section below; alternatively, drop me a mail (sols_achilles_stuff@icloud.com) or hook up on Reddit (u/Unique-Seagull-2370) for an active exchange!
